Mile High Comics - Jason Street Store aka Comic Geek Mecca

http://www.milehighcomics.com/images/email/020713pano.jpg

The Jason Street Mile High Comics is considered to be the largest comic book store and warehouse in the United States.  The stores is over 45 thousand square feet and hold over 10 million comics.  Mile High Comics is owned by the legendary comic figure Chuck Rozanski who early in his career found one of the greatest early comic book collection known in existence that has helped build up a comic empire.

News May 11, 2017:

There was a massive hail storm that hit Denver in May 2017 and it the Mile High Comics Jason Street Megastore.  The stores is effectively one of the largest (If not the Largest) comic collections in the world.  The good news is that though the building suffered damage and current comics were destroy the store did seem to manage to protect their massive warehouse of back issues.

Video:

Video and images of the hail can be seen at:

Owner Chuck was quoted as saying:
As I ran downstairs to see what was going on, all 42 of our beautiful skylights (including the one over my desk…) simultaneously disintegrated under the bombardment of those huge hailstones. We had shards of sharp acrylic raining down everywhere in the store, followed by the unbelievable sight of an indoor hailstorm! Everyone had to take cover to keep from getting injured by these huge hunks of ice, as a direct hit could easily have caused broken bones, a concussion, or worse. Through sheer good fortune, no one was injured.

Mile High Comics selling Warehouse

http://cdn.bleedingcool.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/chuck-rozanski-site.jpg
Chuck Rozanski owner of Mile High Comics

Mile High Comics owner Chuck Rozanski has announced that company is selling one of its two warehouses.  Why are they doing this?  The reason is specific to Colorado commercial real estate.

The reason is pretty simple the warehouse that Chuck bought 29 years ago has now tripled in value.  This is in large part due to Colorado's marjinuana laws that prohibit growing the planet outside.  Many large commercial buildings like Mile High's warehouse are permitted to be grow houses.

In Chuck's own words:
I simply could no longer ignore the stunning market appreciation caused by the change in the pot laws. In a nutshell, we can now sell the smaller of our two buildings for triple what we paid, thus injecting over a million dollars of fresh working capital into Mile High Comics. Given that our sales representative just closed on a similar building two weeks ago (at the same price as we are asking...), and that he had nine other bidders for that structure, we have little doubt that we will be needing to move out of 56th Ave. by March 31st.

Mile High 56th Avenue Warehouse

The company expects to net above a million dollars and they plan to inject that capital back into the business.  Given that company already has the biggest collection of comics in the world one can only imagine what they will do with this money.  The company plans on taking their inventory at the 56th Avenue location and moving into the Jason Street location.

The company is beginning to offer steep discounts at its website in the hopes of reducing the amount of comics that will need to be moved.

Check out the company's website for more details:

Pinche Tacos

There are many places in Denver to get a taco, but the place that has awesome tacos and matches Deadpool's irreverent style in Pinche Taco.

Pinche Taco whose name means something in Spanish we can't say.   Pinche Taco first grabbed Denverites attention as a Food Truck then as a Food Cart downtown on 16th St.  The awesome and fun street tacos quickly gained fame and it was not long before 2 brick and mortar locations were opened.

Inside Pinche Taco you order soft street tacos on a sushi list.  You pick which one's you want from an eclectic array of tacos and they bring them out.  It is maddeningly simple, awesome way to eat tacos.

The Grub:

Just look at these tacos:

Many awesome Tacos to choose from and all of them are good.

Lengua - My personal favorite is the Lengua which is cow tongue.  The meat just melts in your mouth and the sweet sauce goes off like an explosion in your mouth.

Tequila - The Tequila selection here is nuts so if you want to walk home sideways you can.  You may even leave believing you are the Merc with the Mouth himself.

Be sure to save room for their Churros which come out with a sweet chocolaty dipping sauce.

What is Denver Comic Con?

 http://denverdiatribe.com/episodes/comic-con.jpg

Denver Comic Con is a 3 day convention held every year in Denver Colorado.  The convention fills up the Denver Convention center located in Downtown Denver.  The first DCC convention was held June 15-17th 2012.  It was created to support a non-profit educational group called Comic Book Class Room thats name has since been changed to Pop Culture Class Room.  The event hosts a wide variety of film, comic, game, scifi, horror and cosplay guests every year.

So What exactly does that mean:
  • Exhibition Floor - Basically a comic con is a place where geeks of all stripes get together and do geeky things with others geeks.  Denver Comic Con includes a massive floor space that houses a huge variety of vendors, artists, novelists, comic creators, artists and other guests.
  • Panels -  Panels are little group meetings that are hosted by various guests to discuss a variety of topics.  Everything from Fast vs Slow Zombies to how Chris Hemsworth hair looks like could be discussed in a panel.  Many panels also include the release of video game and movie trailers.
  • Cosplay - The floor space of Denver Comic Con is also full of cosplayers.  These are individuals who dress up as their favorite TV/Film/Novel/Comic character.  The cosplayers are often an attraction to themselves. There is a stage where many pictures of Cosplayers take group shots.  There are also Cosplay tournaments that occur during each con.
  • Education space-  Denver Comic Con supports an educational foundation called the Pop Culture Classroom and as such a large amount of floor space is dedicated for education of young children.  There are a variety of kid centric events and activities in this space.  In the first comic con William Shattner famously read childrens books to a large group of kids.
To really understand a con you need to go to one.  For each person it will mean something different.  There are so many panels and things to see that each person will have a very customized experience based off their own interests.

Attendance:
How big exactly is Denver Comic Con - Answer really, really big

2012:   27,700
2013:   61,000
2014:   86,500
2015: 101,500

I'm trying to find a source of comparison for Denver's attendance in relation to the other Con's.  San Diego Comic Con's site says its attendance in 2013 was 130k+.  I am not sure how many could be included in that plus my guess is a lot!  It looks like both cons in Chicago (Wizard World and C2E2)  are big but smaller than 80k.  Phoenix Comic Con in 2014 was 78k.  Emerald City Comic Con was 70k in 2014.  New York Comic Con in 2014 had attendance of 151k.

My guess is that Denver is now the third biggest con in the US (and likely internationally) behind San Diego and NYC.

Rado Distilling Grand Opening - Denver Rum is here!

http://www.businessden.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Rado-Distilling-ftd.jpg

Rado is for Colorado

The place to be this weekend was the grand opening of Rado Distilling, a new distillery in Arvada Colorado.   Walking up to the grand opening of Rado on Saturday May 30th, 2015 I was greeted by jamming music, a throng of happy locals all proudly sporting a Rado cocktail concoction.  The crowd was big, a giant mixture of young and old, boomer and millennial all jubilantly sipping and enjoying Colorado's newest and perhaps most unique gem.  Whats the deal?  Its about the Rum Baby!

Colorado now has RUM!  that's right not whiskey, not Microbrews, no none of the usual things we are used to seeing in Colorado but RUM.  It is high quality, super smooth Rum that is made in Colorado with the Colorado produce.  Rado distillery goes a step with their innovation further and mixes their liqueur into various cocktails that can made at the bar or even kegged.  The group behind the site has big ideas, including future canned versions of their cocktails.  I was immediately struck with how great an idea this sounded.  I will soon be able to grab a can of a  locally produced, high quality cocktail and carry it with me on the ski slopes or the bike trail.

The bottles on site are not called Rum.  Whats the deal? The type of liquor produced by Rado technically can not be called Rum because its produced with Colorado Sugar Beets as opposed to Sugarcain.  The beauty of this is that the Sugar Beets are local, the problem is that company must call its product Beet Liquor.   I will say from first hand experience what this Beet Liquor tastes like is really damn good Rum.

Unique and Local:
While the Mile High City has become nearly synonymous with microbrews it only has a few distilleries. Most of those distilleries focus on whiskey what makes Rado immediately stand out is that it makes Rum.  That's right the drink known for being made of sugar in the tropics is now being produced in Colorado.  What is really amazing is that Rado is not only producing Rum in Colorado, but that they are also using Colorado crops to produce it.  While Colorado is not known for producing sugar cane the ingredient used to produce Rum, the state does have an ample supply of Sugar Beets.  The founders of Rado learned that Sugar Beets can be transformed to sugar and fermented into liquor.  The company calls this liquor Colorado Beet Spirit.   In the age of trying to use things produced locally it does not get more local than this.

Cocktails:
I loved some of the cocktails at Rado.  I may have over indulged myself in my attempt to sample them.  My personal favorites are:

The Denver Donkey  - Rado's take on a Moscow Mule

and my personal favorite

The Trail Blazer - Liquor, Mango juice and jalapeno.  The Trail Blazer was a sweet with a little kick.  I loved it.  Be sure to try it at Rado.

If you are in Arvada or one of the liquor stores carrying Rado's cocktails be sure to try them.  You won't be disappointed.

Steve's Snappin Dogs

http://www.thebeerdrifter.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/steves.jpg

Feel like a great hot dog or just great fast food without blowing a ton of money.  Steve's Snappin Dogs is your place.  Located on Colfax west of East High School Steve's is built out of an old gas station and has been converted into a hip hot dog hang out spot.   Steve's offers great food at very reasonable prices.  The menu includes a ton of customized fully loaded hot dogs and other wonderful food.

http://www.stevessnappindogs.com/images/steves_snappin_dogs_bottom.jpg

Story:
The story of Steve Ballas and his wife Linda and how they opened Steve's is told in small pictures around the eating area of the restaurant.  Steve liked to cook and after various occupations began catering.  Seeing a gap in the Denver market for hotdogs Steve opened up Steve's Snappin Dogs.
You can find the full history of Steve and his life's passion here:
Steve's Snappin Dogs History

The Grub:
The menu includes a lot of great hot dogs but also offers some other great items.  I have yet to find anything on the menu that is not awesome.

Let me highlight a few items:
Steves BLT is one my families favorites it is melted toasted BLT that holds its own against the amazing hot dogs.

The Denver Dog is a spicy burrito with a tasty hot dog inside of it.  It may sound weird but if you are in the mood for something spicy it definitely hits the spot.

Frozen Hot Chocolate this is really great and tastes very much like the famous Serendipity concoction that tourists flock to in New York, but maybe better?  Try it for yourself!
